Clothing and Makeup Tips

Makeup
Makeup is probably the most critical part of your portrait session. Even if you do not regularly wear makeup or don’t wear much makeup, you need the appropriate amount applied for your portraits to look their best.  Base makeup is very important to wear as it will even out your skin tone.  Also mascara is a must.  Lip gloss will add a nice shine to your lips.  Bring mascara to your session.  If you need a touch up on base makeup we have plenty here.  We also have a variety of lip colors and lip gloss.

Hair
Your hair should reflect YOU and your own style. Senior portraits are not a time to try new looks for your hair that you do not normally do. Any cuts or color should be done at least a week prior to your session to ensure they look their best.  We will not be responsible for removing dark roots.  Also, feel free to change up your hair during your session – add accessories, pull it up, curl it (time permitting), and more!

Tanning
While a little color is nice, be sure not to overdo it for your session.  Tan lines are not attractive (if you have them, best to avoid outfits that show them).

Fingernails
They show!  We recommend having a manicure prior to your portrait session.  No chipped nails!

Blemishes
Don’t worry about bumps and blemishes.  All of our portraits include retouching.

Guys
Please shave prior to coming to your session unless you want the stubbles to show.  Have your hair cut one week prior to your session.  If you have your hair buzzed on top sometimes you will look bald in your photos.

Clothing
We encourage you to bring SEVERAL outfits, and we will help you to select the best ones for your session. Bring a variety of clothing.  Trendy, classic, sporty etc. Accessories add to your portrait session.  Hats, shoes, belts, scarves and don’t forget the jewelry.

We do NOT recommend clothing with high contrast between items. For example when wearing a black shirt with a white skirt, your eyes will naturally be drawn to the area of highest contrast in the image, which in this case would be the skirt (making your hips look larger than they are). Your focus in portraits should most often be your face, and high contrast clothing detracts from this while making parts of your body appear larger (the ones covered with the light clothing).  Pair lights with lights, and darks with darks.

Be conscious of parts of your body that might make you uncomfortable.  For example, if you are uncomfortable with the way that your upper arms look, avoid sleeveless and strapless shirts and dresses as they will make your arms appear larger.  Make sure one of your outfits has sleeves.

Group your outfits together and CARRIED ON HANGERS.  Clothing in a bag or in a suitcase will become wrinkled and will not look good in your portraits.

Bra straps are a nuisance in photos and are hard to photoshop out.  Please bring the appropriate undergarments.

Try your outfits on and make sure they look and feel good on you.  Put all your accessories together with your outfit to make sure it is a look you like.  There is nothing worse then going to your photo session and your clothes not fitting you the way you would like them to.

Guys bring several outfits. Suits do photograph well and make a timeless image.  Also, don’t forget your tie, belt, shoes and socks.

Glasses –Some glasses will produce glare in your senior portraits.  We will try to the best of our ability to photograph you in a way so a glare will not show.
